Kaziranga Tiger Reserve is located at Golaghat and Nagaon district of Assam in India. The park covers about 430 sq km area and is bordered by the iconic Brahmaputra River. History of Kaziranga Tiger Reserve

Kaziranga Wildlife Sanctuary was founded in the year of 1908. It was incepted for preserving the endangered species of Indian one-horned Rhinoceros. This was appealed by Mary Curzon, wife of the-then Viceroy of India – Lord Curzon. The park got the accreditation of a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in the year 1985.  And almost 68 years after its formation, the forest became a tiger reserve in the year 2006.

Flora

Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve is covered with Elephant Tall Grasses, damp marshlands and dense moist tropical forest with wide range of floral variety. The floral diversity includes Kumbhi, Indian gooseberry, sugarcane spear grass, cotton tree, elephant apple etc. Kaziranga also comprises distinct aquatic flora such as Water Hyacinths.

There are nearly 2200 one-horned Rhinoceros in the park. The number comprises almost two-third of the world-wide count for this endangered species. Elephant safari –  Elephant safari in Kaziranga is a thrill in itself. It allows the better sightings of the wild as can go deep inside the forest. Only four tourists are allowed in each ride along with mahaout. Elephant safari trips in Kaziranga are organized by forest department in the morning and evenings. Kaziranga Elephant Safari Rides Timing

  • Experience the elephant safari in Kaziranga, Kohara Range, either in the morning from 05:30 Hrs to 07:30 Hrs or in the afternoon 15:00 Hrs to 16:00 Hrs. Elephant safari during mornings are for 2 hours and evenings are for one hour only.
  • The morning safari shift for elephant safari in Kaziranga at Western Range, Bagori begins from 05:30 Hrs to 07:30 Hrs and the evening shift begins from 15:00 Hrs to 16:00 Hrs.

Jeep Safari

Morning and afternoon jungle safari bookings can be done in Kaziranga. Jeep covers larger area than elephant safari during the game drive in Kaziranga. Tourist from all over the world visit Kaziranga national park to sight the one-horned rhinoceros.

Best Season to Visit Kaziranga Tiger Reserve

Kaziranga National Park experiences three major seasons of summer, monsoon and winter. The summer in Kaziranga starts from February till May. Kaziranga during summer has a varying temperature of 7°C to 37°C.

The monsoon in this area remains hot & humid and starts from mid June till September. The mid-valley of Brahmaputra is considered to be one of the rainiest places in the world. River Brahmaputra overflows results flood in Kaziranga National Park, which ensures the biological balance of the National park. Kaziranga National Park is accessible during monsoon.

Kaziranga experiences winter from November to January with a temperature varying from 5°C to 25°C. The winters remain mild and dry in Kaziranga National park.
